The artwork in Modern Dialect draws inspiration from events taking place in early 20th century America. Whether it is poverty, war, or celebrating the American dream, the work evokes many feelings from the viewer. Local artists Jim Draper, Lily Kuonen, and Dustin Harewood will be on hand to discuss how their own artwork helps to illustrate their idea of the American Experience. Come listen to what these contemporary artists have to say about the inspiration for their work in this panel discussion led by The Cummer’s Chief Curator, Holly Keris.
About our Panelists:
Originally from Mississippi, Jim Draper has long been heralded as a Jacksonville favorite in the arts community and beyond. His artwork, very much influenced by nature, can be seen throughout the city. His love of the natural environment can be seen in his works, which are heavily influenced by the diverse and beautiful Florida landscape, and his desire to bring attention to its ecological threats.
Lily Kuonen has referred to growing up in a house in Arkansas that was built by her father and other family and friends. The experiences of her childhood have played a huge role in influencing her artistic process today. She likes to refer to her process as a continuous project. Using unconventional items, she is drawn to materials around her and how she can incorporate those into her art.
Raised in New York City and Barbados, Dustin Harewood now calls Jacksonville home. He is not only known for his colorful, abstract works but also for his detailed portraits and drawings.
