DOCENT HIGHLIGHT: KATHY & DAVE STIMPSON

Feb

kathydaveWe are so appreciative to our Docent Corps and this month we highlight this sweet couple for dedicating time to the Museum as Cummer Docents. We are so glad Kathy and Dave moved to Florida in 2005 from Portland, Maine. Kathy attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and they are both graduates of Western Michigan University. Kathy was a public school music teacher and continues to offer private study opportunities. Dave is a retired banker who also served as Corporate Relations Director for Jacksonville University for four years.

Docent Volunteer Work

Kathy: I began my docent volunteer work with the Portland Museum of Art and also Greater Portland Landmarks leading tours of the Portland Observatory and the Portland Head Lighthouse. When Hope McMath presented at a Newcomers of the Beaches meeting I became aware of the docent corp opportunity and entered the  training program in 2008.

Dave: I started my volunteer work at the Cummer in 2013 in the Gift Shop assisting Susan as an “unpacker and pricer” and closet cleaner extraordinaire! After helping guide with Kathy at VSA I began docent training in the fall of 2014.

Favorite Part of the Job

Kathy: It is difficult to choose a favorite part about volunteering at the museum.

It is a joy to see a child’s eyes light up with a new sense of wonder noticing the details of the world through art and nature or show personal pride in a project they have created.  While leading public tours, I enjoy interacting with people of all ages as they learn about the Cummer.  I always learn something new from the guests on the tours.  The personal enrichment through learning, studying and training is so very rewarding. And last but certainly not least working with and learning from the Education staff and Museum personnel. The Cummer Museum is a great place to volunteer.

Dave: Being rooted in the finance side of the world I have enjoyed learning and appreciating the artistic side of life. Most of all I enjoy working with the young people that come to us on school tours. I try to help them learn the required concepts while encouraging them to embrace art appreciation for lifetime enjoyment.  Being a bit of a “ham” I enjoy making their visits fun and memorable.

Spare Time Interests

Kathy: When I am not reading, or involved with my music, I enjoy kayaking with a group of friends and traveling.  Meeting people and learning about new places and cultures is fascinating.

Dave: I enjoy playing golf and travel. I have also been a public member of two Florida Bar Association committees in the recent past.
