Lee Hunter Charlotte Mabrey Philip Pan Al Letson
About a year ago, musician and songwriter Lee Hunter of the band Tammerlin, percussionist Charlotte Mabrey, and violinist and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra Concert Master Philip Pan began a collaboration with The Cummer to create a performance in celebration of the Gardens and their setting along the St. Johns River. They began the process by researching the archives of The Cummer, digging through letters and diaries of Ninah Cummer. Next, they invited actor, poet and radio host, Al Letson to join them. The result is a performance of music and spoken word featuring text from Ninah’s speeches, garden journals and other writings which will be performed by Letson.
The text will be mixed with and supported by music that reflects the setting. The music will include a marimba solo performed by Mabrey, a hauntingly beautiful piece for piano and vibraphone by Arvo Part performed by Mabrey and Hunter, an original song written and performed by Hunter along with Pan and Mabrey, a medley of violin works performed by Pan, improvisations and more. This collaboration captures not only the beauty of The Cummer’s existing Gardens, but provides insight into the passionate woman who had the vision, heart and energy to bring such beauty to our city.
