As an Elementary Education major, I have never really had experience with teaching outside of the traditional classroom setting. This internship sparked my interest as a way to integrate the passion I have for working with children with my love of artistic expression. One of the most gratifying opportunities I have had the chance to be a part of is the garden based learning outreach program at Woodland Acres Elementary School. This initiative, thanks to a grant from the Weaver Academy, has given me the chance to assist in teaching art and garden education to students as well as helping to revitalize the school’s existing garden. The enthusiasm from the students and the positive feedback from the faculty and staff at Woodland Acres have been so rewarding, and it has been amazing to view STEAM education at work and realize its progressive impact. I have loved my involvement with the Cummer Museum so far and I am excited to see the growth of the arts and gardens integration outreach program within our local school system!
