Docent of the Month: Joanne Philpot

Oct

31

docentWhy did you want to be a Docent and how long have you been with the Museum? My friend and former colleague, Claire Nielsen, approached me about becoming a Docent when I told her I would be retiring from teaching after 31 years. It was an easy sell for Claire; the Cummer Museum has been a favorite since my husband and I moved to Jacksonville in 1984. This is my first year as a full-fledged Docent.
What is your favorite part of this job? Working with the children is my favorite part of being a Docent. I taught middle and high school, so interacting with the little ones is like starting my teaching career over minus the paper grading – just the joy!
What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t generously donating your time to the Museum? Reading and going for walks in the neighborhood with my husband and our 2 miniature dachshunds. I am also looking forward to an upcoming trip to Okinawa and Japan to visit with our Marine son who is stationed there.
