“Deep River” Opening Events

Deep River detailThe Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is honored to have artist Whitfield Lovell’s Deep River on display at the Museum. Lovell, a 2007 MacArthur Fellowship winner, creates site specific, multimedia installations that explore the legacy of African Americans who fled from slavery in pursuit of freedom during the Civil War. His artwork is filtered through his personal history and memories as he uses Conte crayon to create the captivating portraits.

The curatorial team is busy building walls, installing projectors and preparing for the opening! On Wednesday, May 20th the Museum will host a special Members Only Preview Day, followed by an Opening Celebration that evening! Then, come back on Thursday, May 21st for Conversations & Cocktails. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Mr. Lovell speak in person about the creative process behind his work.Flight from the Deep River Mound
