George Bellows was born August 12, 1882 in Columbus, Ohio.
An American realist painter and lithographer, he was noted for action scenes and his expressive portraits and seascapes. His early works show of urban subject matter, later on his works show a greater range of color and began to shift to rural landscapes, seascapes, and portraits of family members and friends. Towards the end of his career he experimented with lithography, an early printing method.
