Happy Birthday Peter Paul Rubens!

Jun

28

Written by Liliana Cerquozzi

Peter Paul Rubens was born on June 28, 1577.

Rubens was known as a 17th century Flemish baroque painter who’s  known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history painting of mythological and allegorical subjects. His style emphasized movement, color, and sensuality. Aside from Rubens running a large studio in Antwerp, Belgium which produced painting popular with nobility and art collectors throughout Europe, Rubens was also a classically educated humanist scholar, art collector, and diplomat who was knighted by both Philip IV, King of Spain, and Charles I, King of England. Now that’s what I call a Renaissance Man.
