LaVilla: “Harlem of the South” – Bus Tour

Oct

19

Saturday, November 3, 2012
10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The Harlem Renaissance began in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City and was a period in American history when significant contributions, made by African Americans to music, poetry, dance, theatre and more, were noticed and embraced by the general public. It was a time that fostered creative expression and a new cultural identity for the black community. While most of the buzz was happening in Harlem, the LaVilla neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida was experiencing its own burst of creativity and has very definite links to the Harlem Renaissance. On Saturday, November 3, we intend to explore this connection.

Travel through Jacksonville’s LaVilla neighborhood on a stimulating bus tour and learn about the rich history of this cultural area. From the Ritz Museum and Theatre to the old Globe Theatre, now the Clara White Mission, hear stories of the famous musicians, artists, and writers who contributed to the hotbed of artistic expression that took place right here in our home town.  The tour will be followed by a delicious soul food meal and live music from the Harlem Renaissance.

Attendance is $45 for members while non-members will pay $55. The tour is limited to 30 participants, so please call (904) 899-6038 to make your required reservations by Monday, October 29. Or visit our website to pay online.
