The Cummer is continually seeking new ways of improving our member experience. We are excited to announce a new format for our Members’ Openings that will create greater opportunities to preview new exhibitions. Member Previews will now span an entire day and will include private tours with exclusive access to the exhibition, an increased discount at The Cummer Store and The Café, art-making activities and live music. The Café will be open for lunch and dinner during this full-day event. The ongoing support from our Members is very important to The Cummer and its staff, and we want to give you the best experience possible. The first of our openings with this new format will for Modern Dialect, this Friday, October 18 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. We will be offering art-making projects in the Mason Gallery, there will be live music, and we will be giving private exhibition tours at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m.
Modern Dialect brings together 68 examples of American Scene and modernist paintings from the 1930s and 1940s, works that exposed and sometimes celebrated a changing America. The exhibition will highlight works by some of the most respected American artists of the early 20th century, including Charles Burchfield, George Ault, Charles Sheeler, and Clarence Carter, as well as introduce such fascinating artists as Clyde Singer, Lois Mabel Head, Arthur Osver, and others. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue are structured thematically to reveal concerns of American painters from every region of the country.
