As part of The Cummer’s Landscape Enhancement Plan, Takashi Soga’s, Sea of the Ear Rings, needed to be relocated to the other end of the museum campus. This 13 ft x 13 ft gravity driven sculpture is now the cornerstone to the new J. Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver Community Sculpture Garden & Plaza, which will open to the public on Saturday, September 21.
Moving this sculpture is no easy feat. It requires a skilled team of riggers, 10 feet of scaffolding, a crane, a trailer that can hold 4,000 lbs and the artist himself. All these facets came together this week and in one day the sculpture was dismantled, driven down Riverside Avenue piece by piece and reassembled in the new location.
Here’s a glimpse into how we accomplished this.
