Margete Griffin’s work Running Down a Dream will be on display in the Our Shared past exhibition, on view in the Stein Gallery from December 17, 2013 to May 25, 2014.
A statement by Margete Griffin:
“Breaking away to paths unknown takes courage. Whether it’s the exuberance of a child, the independence of youth or the reinventing of self in later years, the phases of life beckon us to break away and grow.
I found myself in the midst of transition in recent years. Seeking inspiration and adventure I set out for New York City. I hit the ground running, just like little Debbie Sue. I can almost hear her excited footsteps slapping the pavement at full speed, with warnings ringing out from behind…and yet, she runs in pace with her dreams The shadows reflect meaning from my past.
The 5 birds are symbolic for the 5 kids I encouraged in their youth. Now they are men, running down their own dreams. For years, an old framed mirror from my childhood bedroom stood in a stagnant hall waiting for its chance to reflect life again. A fresh coat of paint and a new purpose brought it into the present. I chose it to frame Debbie Sue, especially for this exhibit, linking Our Shared Past.”
There will be artist appearances at the Stein Gallery January through April. Each Saturday, artists from the exhibition will be in the Gallery from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Others will make appearances throughout the day on Weaver Free Saturdays (the first of each month), and on Tuesday evenings during the exhibition.
