Born in Green Cove Springs, Florida, Augusta Savage (1892 – 1962) is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century, and the first African American elected to the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors.

#5WomenArtists – Alice Kent Stoddard

Mrs. Ninah Cummer (1875 – 1958) had her portrait painted in 1927, when she was in her early fifties. The artist, Alice Kent Stoddard (1885 – 1976), was born in Watertown, Connecticut, but left her hometown to study at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art and Design), and at the renowned Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under the guidance of famous artists Thomas Eakins (1844 – 1916) and William Merritt Chase (1849 – 1916).

Springfield is the home of Porchfest, a new mural, and soon two new breweries; it’s redeveloping. The neighborhood feels different, and Anthony Aiuppy, Thony to those who know him best, loves this area.

Our beautiful painting by Marie-Victoire Lemoine, Youth with an Embroidered Vest, has embarked on a national journey! It is currently part of a fascinating exhibition presented at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, in Winter Park, Florida. The Black Figure in the European Imaginary (January 20 through May 15, 2017), explores “the manner in which the visual arts of Europe imagined black people during the long nineteenth century (c. 1750 — 1914)”.

Julius Rosenwald: Businessman and Philanthropist

On February 1, the Cummer Museum, in collaboration with MOSH, will present the film Rosenwald, about Jewish-American philanthropist Julius Rosenwald. This film sheds light on the silent partner of the pre-Civil Rights movement and his ties to Jacksonville and artist Augusta Savage. There will be a discussion following the film.

New Exhibition Showcases 19th-Century Academic Artwork

Academic Splendor: Nineteenth-Century Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art will open January 27 at the Cummer Museum. The Dahesh Museum of Art is the only institution in the United States that is devoted to collecting, exhibiting, and interpreting works by European and American academically trained artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
