Shannon Estlund’s works Distance I and Distance II, will be in the Our Shared Past exhibition, on view in the Stein Gallery from December 17, 2013 to May 25, 2014.
A statement from the artist:
“Distance I and Distance II reflect on the distance between the viewer and the world being portrayed, the physical and metaphorical distance between individuals, and the distance between our present selves and our past. The two paintings share the same composition with differing materials and execution. By doubling the image I am investigating ideas about the subjectivity of perception and associations with cinematic time, mirrors, and parallel universes. The figure reaches toward the viewer in a gesture that conveys a longing for closeness. This sentiment is mirrored in my own motivation for painting: to connect with the world.”
There will be artist appearances at the Stein Gallery January through April. Each Saturday, artists form the exhibition will be in the Gallery from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Others will make appearances throughout the day on Weaver Free Saturdays, and on Tuesday evenings during the exhibition.
