Patrick Moser ‘s Video performance Lindy for Lois, will be in the Our Shared Past exhibition, on view in the Stein Gallery from December 17, 2013 to May 25, 2014.
A statement from the artist:
“This video performance is the result, in part, of my failure to transform the images Jefree made available to us into paint. The stills are quite beautiful on their own and unlike so many of my contemporaries in this wonderful exhibition, I ultimately felt trapped in the gulf between the static image and my painted marks. I was attracted to a particular still of Lois striding through a tourist destination in an outrageous pair of shorts.
Upon learning that Lois was alive and would be attending this exhibit I felt compelled to reach out to her, seeking her input into the making of a work. The past exists always in relation to the present. Once I began to correspond and collaborate with Lois through email the resulting performance with my mother was inevitable. The video became a mechanism for using the past to move forward, to learn the Lindy Hop, to celebrate the relationship I have with my own mother and to understand Lois and her family with a depth I never could have achieved had I elected to stay within myself.
I’m thankful to Jefree for granting me the freedom to follow this path and I’m extremely grateful to Lois for her engagement in the process, which is evidenced by our email conversation opening the video. The original music composed by Kevin Mahoney shapes the work perfectly and I obviously enjoyed the time with my wonderful mother, Sharon Moser. I wear a homemade mask in the video.”
There will be artist appearances at the Stein Gallery January through April. Each Saturday, artists from the exhibition will be in the Gallery from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Others will make appearances throughout the day on Weaver Free Saturdays, and on Tuesday evenings during the exhibition.
