Lyonia lucida is a species of flowering plant in the heath family known by the common names Fetterbush, Hurrahbush, and Staggerbush. This plant grows on the coastal plain of the southeastern United States from Virginia to Florida to Louisiana. It grows in dry habitats but it is usually found in wet places, including those that are periodically flooded. Growing in shrubby bogs, wet savannas, conifer swamps, and scrub, lyonia lucida is common in the Okefenokee Swamp.
This shrub can grow to up 15 feet in height and just as wide. The leathery leaves are alternately arranged on scaly twigs and are oval in shape. Flowers are bell-shaped and range in color from white to pink with fragrant blooms. In addition to being a good source of nectar, it has been documented that Seminole Indians used the wood of fetterbush to make bowls for their tobacco pipes.
