Art for Two: Creating Personal Perspectives

At a recent Art for Two class, a group of 3- to 5-year-olds are in the studio, crouched down in front of a line of stools that each have an identical object atop. Peering with one eye open, they begin to giggle as they realize that the object closest to them looks much bigger than the ones farther away, even though they’re actually the same size. “This one is in the foreground!” says one of the kids, pointing to the first object.

October marks Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month in museums and cultural institutions around the world. In contribution to the effort to raise awareness of disability, accessibility, and inclusion, the Cummer Museum displays its annual exhibition of artwork from the Women of Vision program during this month. Installed in the Museum’s Art Connections area, the show is open to the public and features works in of printmaking, ceramics, painting, and sculpture.

The 4th annual Envirofest is just around the corner! On Saturday, October 7, 2017, the Cummer Museum and the Environmental Protection Board will host this free family-friendly event that seeks to cultivate curiosity, respect, and understanding of the Jacksonville community’s shared natural environment, and the plant and animal wildlife in and around the city’s neighborhoods.

7 Reasons Your Teen Should Join the Junior Docent Program

August marks the shifting of energies to return to school, and it is the time to apply to become a Junior Docent. Starting in September and continuing through April, Junior Docents attend regular meetings on Tuesday nights at the Museum. The program is open to all interested students in the 6th through 12th grade.

Ink, Silk, and Gold: The Regions

In the cities of Cairo, Aleppo, and Damascus, architecture and art flourished under the patronage of Mamluk rulers (1250 – 1517) made rich by trade. Elaborate lamps, pulpits, and stands holding Qur’an manuscripts were present in mosques and tombs. Many ornate objects made from brass heavily inlaid with silver and copper, were used at court.
